Step 6 of 9 10 min
Track your pedigrees
Every bird gets its parents from the pair it was bred from, or from a father and a mother linked directly. The Genealogy page turns them into four readings, the ancestry, the fan chart, the tree and the descendants, over three generations on the Free plan and four with Premium or Pro.
The path, move by move
- 1
Open the Genealogy page and choose a bird
By its ring or its name, in the selector at the top of the page.
- 2
Set the number of generations
Three on the Free plan, four with Premium or Pro.
- 3
Switch from one view to another
Ancestry, Fan chart, Tree or Descendants: the same bird, four readings.
- 4
Check the parents that come from pairs
A youngster hatched from a recorded clutch gets its parents from its pair, with nothing to enter.
- 5
Link a missing parent
From its unknown box in the tree, or from the Parents block of the record.
- 6
Export the pedigree certificate
As PDF, with Premium or Pro.
Choosing a bird
The Genealogy page always starts from a bird. Choose it in the selector at the top of the page, by its ring or its name: it becomes the root of every view.
The four views work the same way. A click on a bird makes it the root, a double click opens its record, and a right click offers both moves as well as opening the pair it was bred from. A breadcrumb trail reminds you where you have been and takes you back to the bird you started from.
The ancestry, generation by generation
The Ancestry view lays the ancestors out in columns: the parents, the grandparents, the great-grandparents. Every bird faces its two parents, the father above, the mother below, and the known boxes show the breed, the colour, the age and the best exhibition results.
The number of generations is set with the “−” and “+” buttons of the toolbar. The Free plan goes back up to three generations, from the parents to the great-grandparents; Premium and Pro add a fourth. The same limit applies both ways, towards the ancestors as towards the descendants.

- 1 The bird you are studying, chosen by its ring or its name.
- 2 The choice of view: Ancestry, Fan chart, Tree or Descendants.
- 3 The number of generations shown: three on the Free plan, four with Premium or Pro.
- 4 The pedigree certificate and the descendants report, as PDF, with Premium or Pro.
The fan chart
The fan chart shows the same ancestry as a half circle, one generation per ring. It is the view of the gaps: a sector with no bird points straight at the branch to complete, and so at the record to look at first. In the page settings, you choose what each sector shows: the ring, the year of birth or the colour.
The same ancestry as a fan chart: one generation per ring, and every empty box shows at once.
The tree
The tree is the interactive view: you zoom in, you move around, and an overview places the visible part within the whole tree. It can show the ancestors and the descendants at the same time, on either side of the bird you are studying, with a depth setting for each direction.
The interactive tree: ancestors on one side, descendants on the other, and an overview to find your way.
- 1 The overview places the visible part within the whole tree.
The descendants
The Descendants view lists the young of the bird you are studying, their own young, and the following generations. The young are grouped by pairing: with which partner, which season, how many young. Every level folds away, and the columns are chosen in the settings, down to the age and the number of young produced.

Where the parents come from
A bird gets its parents from two sources: the pair it was bred from, or a father and a mother linked directly. One rule everywhere: the direct link wins on its side, otherwise the pair answers.
The pair is the natural source. A youngster hatched from a recorded clutch is given its parent pair when it is created, and the tree fills itself with nothing to enter. A bird’s form also lets you choose that pair by hand.
In a classic pair, the father and the mother are known. In a breeding group, polygamous or complex, with several cocks and several hens, a side with a single candidate is known; a side with several stays “uncertain” in the tree, with the list of candidates, until you specify the right parent.
An empty box can be linked
Not every bird is bred at home. For a bird you bought, were given, or simply entered without its pair, there is no need to create a pair just for the occasion: in the Ancestry view, its “Unknown father” or “Unknown mother” box can be clicked and opens the link window.
A cock bought as an adult, with no known parents: both parent boxes offer the link.
- 1 “Link father”: the unknown box opens the link window.
- 2 “Link mother”, in the same way.
The link window
The window only offers plausible birds: of the right sex, older than the youngster and of the same species, with a search by ring or by name. A tick box widens the list to all species.
The parent is not in your farm yet? “Create a new bird” opens its form, and the bird is linked as soon as it is saved. The app refuses a parent of the wrong sex, a descendant of the bird, or a parent that contradicts its parent pair.
The link window only offers birds of the right sex, older and of the same species.
- 1 The search, by ring or by name.
- 2 The candidates: one click chooses, the button at the bottom saves the link.
- 3 The missing bird can be created on the way, and it is linked as soon as it is saved.
From the bird’s record
The Parents block of the record offers the same buttons, “Link father” and “Link mother”. A parent linked directly is marked “Direct link” there, and the link is removed with one click. The bird’s form offers a third way, in “No parent pair” mode.
A parent moved to the bin shows on its young as “In the bin”, with a button to restore it; deleted for good, it stays named on the youngster’s record, struck through.
The Parents block of the record: the mother linked directly, the father still to link.
- 1 “Direct link”: this parent does not come from a pair. The link is removed with one click, on the same line.
- 2 The same move as in the tree, from the record.
Printing a pedigree
With Premium or Pro, the export of the Genealogy page produces two PDF documents: a pedigree certificate in landscape, and a descendants report arranged pair by pair, in portrait. They are generated from your data, not by capturing the screen: they stay sharp when printed, from the computer as from the phone.
Inbreeding, for information
From the common ancestors of the father and the mother, the app calculates the inbreeding coefficient with Wright’s formula, over the generations shown. It appears on the bird’s record, while you put a pair together and in the statistics. It is information: when the known ancestry is too incomplete to conclude, the app says so rather than showing a reassuring zero.
What you have on screen at the end of this step
A bird's ancestry readable at a glance, and its empty boxes filled without creating a pair just for the occasion.
